What does THAT mean?

Nov-13-2006 By annelions

There are so many expressions in English that get borrowed from other languages. Some of them get pretty mangled in the translation. Sure, you may know what ‘a la mode’ means for us English speakers, but what about French speakers? You may or may not know that it means ‘fashionable’. What that has to do with ice cream, I have no idea…

So many phrases are borrowed, ad nauseam, that you may want to look at this list of borrowed Latin phrases, or this one of French phrases.

Learning English

Oct-26-2006 By annelions

In my time online, I’ve talked to/emailed people from all over the world. Italy, Australia, Asia, Germany… All over. Some of them have almost perfect written English skills, some not so much. No doubt some of them could benefit from getting help at English School London.

Heck, sometimes I think I, personally, could benefit from learning English in another country. Petrol, cookies/biscuits, chips/crisps… and then there’ve been some really odd misunderstandings. :-D

Seriously, though, that site offers free help in learning languages in London; finding a school, a place to stay, etc. They also offer a free monthly ‘English class’ with travel phrases.

It’s currently geared towards people who speak Spanish, since that’s the language translation thingie at the top.

I want to learn Spanish so I can go to England and learn English. ;-)
