Waking up with a kitten on your face

Jun-15-2007 By annelions

The past couple days, I have had a most interesting alarm clock. You see, the kitten’s been sleeping on my bed. Almost as soon as it starts getting light out, the kitten starts getting all excited. If the kitten happens to be under the blanket when the sun’s coming up, the blanket happens to look like it has a rather large kitten-sized piece of popcorn underneath – in the process of popping.

But the kitten doesn’t stop there. If I don’t wake up quickly enough (as in, within 3 minutes), the kitten starts jumping on my face. Literally jumping and pouncing on my face, as if it’s a bit of string. Of course, as soon as I’m actually awake, this stops.

All I can say is that it’s a very… interesting way to wake up.

Kitten update

The kitten is growing nicely and attacking everything, as kittens tend to do. Aside from kitten-milk covered cat food (cat cereal), the kitten also goes absolutely bonkers for… refried beans. If you open up a can of it, the kitten screams and cries and climbs up your leg until you finally give a (small) spoonful.

Weird. Cats aren’t supposed to like beans.

I ordered a pizza with bacon on it the other day and the kitten went nuts over that, too. I had to give some of my bacon away, just to keep the kitten from standing on my pizza.

Oh well.

Kitten attack

The kitten has now grown enough to start ‘attacking’ me when it’s hungry. It runs up to me (it doesn’t sleep that far away) and starts trying to suck on my knee. Then when I pick it up, it starts chewing on and clawing my fingers, at least until I can get it to chew on and suck from the kitten bottle.

It’s about time to start teaching the kitten how to eat real food. I ordered pizza the other day and gave it little tiny, tiny bits of bacon. It ate them, though I’m not sure it knew it was eating them. It had more fun sucking on my greasy fingers.

It’s KITTEN time!

Every couple years, there’s a stray mother cat around here (not the same one) that has kittens and then abandons them. So, of course, I end up having to rescue them. Two days ago, I heard mewing under my window and went out to look.

I found two brand new kittens and their mother in some tall weeds. Okay, well, maybe things will be okay? So I waited… and waited… and 3 hours later the kittens were still squealing. When I’d look, the mother cat wasn’t even near her babies… she just sat there with a ‘what do I do?!’ sort of look on her face.

So, finally, three hours later I went to go get them. The mother wasn’t nursing them or anything. There were two kittens there, both grey and one smaller than the other one. The smaller one was pretty soaking wet, since the weeds were growing there due to swamp cooler runoff. So I brought them inside, warmed them up and started trying to feed them some emergency formula (milk, egg & salad oil).

That evening, I got a bottle and cans of kitten milk (milk for kittens, not made of kittens!) and started trying to feed them that. The bigger one quickly realized that bottle = food = good. But the smaller one would only eat a little or not at all and then cry.

Unfortunately, the smaller kitten died this morning… I guess being in the water and starved for 3 hours was just too much for it. The larger kitten, however, is doing just fine. It eats and then sleeps… and is so very tiny.

I love kittens… but I don’t need any more cats! Oh well.
