Nearly twelve thousand!

Oct-27-2007 By annelions

No, that’s not a good thing. That’s the number of spam comments that Akismet has caught since I started using WordPress. Roughly 1,000 per month, 33 per day. More than one per hour. Annoying.

So I’ve decided to join in on helping to fight spam with honey. If you’re a person, you don’t want to click on that link. But if you’re a bot, go ahead.

Spam must die!

The worst comics ever!

Oct-22-2007 By annelions

I’ve been a member of Wowio for awhile now. Since August 13th, to be exact. In that time, I have managed to download 267 books; most of which I ‘will read later’. Eventually.

However, I was pleased to find out that they had original series Star Trek comics for download. When I first looked, there were only 8 comics and now I find that they have a total of 16. 8 more. This is both a blessing and a curse. Why? These are some of the worst-written things I’ve ever seen. And people presumably paid for them at one point!

Not only do the characters only vaguely resemble Kirk, Spock, McCoy, etc., there are grave technical inconsistancies.

  1. Instead of exploring planets, the Enterprise explores ‘galaxies’. Yet their travelling speed is still very low.
  2. The engines of the Enterprise are just that: rocket engines. Multiple drawings show rocket exhaust venting from the engine nacelles. Kirk calls for ‘full rocket speed’ in at least one issue.
  3. Instead of a universal translator, the crew of the Enterprise speak ‘Esperanta’. I guess using Esperanto would have been too ‘Earthly’; just change one letter and nobody will be able to tell. Sure.
  4. The whole ship, as drawn by the artists, looks like something out of a bad sci-fi movie. The transporter pad is enclosed in what seems to be glass, I believe there is a periscope at one point and the bridge looks like a submarine command center with Spock even wearing huge headphones.
  5. Page 1 of issue 6 (When Planets Collide): Enterprise has absolutely no shields. None. How do I know there are no shields? Asteroids are punching holes in the bridge. From the vacuum of space. Kirk doesn’t even call for shields as two crewmembers struggle with controls; one at what seems to be a ’steering wheel’ and the other at some sort of lever operated mechanism.

It’s hard to believe, reading these, that they were commercially produced. Not only that, but that the Star Trek franchise eventually went on for four more series and going on eleven movies. Star Trek was very, very lucky.

Time to play beauty parlor

I’m not usually one to care a lot about my looks. If people like how I look, that’s fine. If not, alright. But sometimes it is fun to play around and think about “what if I…?” Unfortunately, before computers came along, this entailed actually experimenting with different looks until you found one you liked. Of course, hair doesn’t grow so fast so if you cut it too short then you’d be stuck with a bad haircut for awhile. And if you processed it (color, perm, etc.) too many times, you ran the risk of severely damaging your hair and even making it fall out! Yuck!

It’s a good thing that we live in a computer age now, where with a few clicks you can start playing around with how you might look. Give yourself a celebrity hairstyle, a new makeup job or just see how you’d look if you had a different color of hair. The possibilities are endless at Makeover Solutions.

I’ve been spending the past half hour or so playing with various settings until I’ve found one I think I like. You can see the results below. The picture on the left is the ‘after’ picture and the one on the right is the ‘before’ picture. I changed my hair color to something a bit lighter than the dirty brown color it is now, added a bit of makeup and a pair of glasses. You can’t see them, but I also added a pair of earrings. If I had chosen a different hairstyle, the earrings would be more visible.

There is a ton of choices at Makeover Solutions and I’m tempted to subscribe so that I can get even more choices. Perhaps later, then the next time I go to get my hair cut, I’ll be able to print out what I’ve chosen so that I can have something to show the person.

Found: The Carol Burnett Show

Oct-9-2007 By annelions

For years, I have heard of the ‘Gone With the Wind’ sketch from the Carol Burnett show. Since I’m not old enough to have seen it when it came on, I’ve only seen bits and pieces of the show. And only a short clip from this sketch in particular. I’ve been looking on YouTube every so often, but had no luck. However, finally, I was able to watch the whole thing. It’s good and I love the curtains.

You want to watch it? Well, it’s in two parts as seen below:
