Sure, with FF and IE, you can simply ‘bookmark’ a newsfeed… or, with something like Gmail, you can save newsfeeds to run across as a ticker. But what if you’ve got more than two or three sites you want to watch? And what if you’ve got more than one computer you want to watch them on? Things get a bit difficult then!
Fortunately, there are sites like Newgie.com. Unfortunately, there does not seem to be a way to add any and all RSS feeds (like one to my blog
)… but there is quite a long list of sites there nevertheless.
The main categories are: frontpage, frontpage UK, frontpage Canada, business & finance, sports, government & politics, society & economics, technology & science… as well as several others. It’s really a long list.
Under the blog (Tech & Science) category, I can subscribe to Techcrunch (boo! booo!); Gizmodo; Engadget and nearly two dozen others.
In the ‘other’ category, there are three feeds for ‘odd’ news. I have subscribed to them all.
The navigation is a bit difficult, and not as intuitive as some sites, but you kind of get used to it. Hopefully, the navigation will get better (the site is in beta) over time.
One cool thing is that when you mouse-over most of the links, you get a short snippet of the story instead of only seeing the headlines… or the snippet cluttering up the page with the headlines. When you click on a link, you’re taken to the news site with the Newgie frame on top, which you can click to get rid of.
There’s also an ‘add to faves’ link on the framebar, in case you want to save the story for later. I think this also ‘votes for’ a site to suggest that other people might find it interesting, but I’m not sure. As I said, the navigation needs a bit of work.
All in all, for being in beta, the site is pretty good. I hope to see it get even better.
