Unlucky day…

Aug-29-2006 By annelions

I may or may not be online during the next two weeks. My mom announced that there'd be no internet for two weeks, but she usually changes her mind in a day or two. *sigh*

I've been looking for a decent, cheap, computer; still no luck. Too many people throw their computers away. I'd gladly take it! As long as it's at least 1.5GHz and takes SDRAM. Yeah.

If I had a college degree, I could get a good job and have lots of money to get a computer. But I need money to get a degree to get a job to have money to get a degree to… It's an annoying cycle.

I did find an interesting site that tells how to get a 4 year degree (I thought a Bachelor's was a 2 year degree; I get so confused) in about a month. It does require taking an awful lot of tests, but it does end up being cheaper than even community college; if you can study enough on your own. According to the site, it costs about $4,000 total. 120 credit hours at my local community college costs $7,800, and that's not even counting the price of books.

If I only had $4,000.

Every trip an adventure

After getting the Sunday paper last night, my mom decided that she wanted soda. Due to all the construction around, this turned out to be a very convoluted trip. No left turns here, no U-turns there… anyway, we ended up going across train tracks.

Normally, going across train tracks is nothing. Especially in the daytime. Tonight, however, just as we were approaching the tracks, the lights on the crossing signals started to flash. The arms slowly started to swing down.

My mom didn't seem to be stopping.

I said, “Stop, stop, stop.” and she finally hit the brakes, just as the bars finished coming down. A couple seconds later, the train started going by. My mom commented, “Oh. I was wondering what all the blinking lights were.” Now, she might've been joking. And we probably could've continued before the train went by. But I'd really rather not find out either one.

Computers don't depreciate fast enough

I've been looking everywhere for computers. eBay, uBid, Amazon, various computer websites… So few under $200 total (including shipping). The ones that are are generally low on RAM or processing speed. That's no good at all. I don't want a speed demon, but I would like at least 1.5GHz and 512RAM (or for it to take SDRAM).

I've got over $100, but nowhere near $200. Almost to $120. At this rate, it'll be forever until I can get a 'new' computer.

I am not me

I noticed an ad for WaMu (Washington Mutual) today. Free checking and you can sign up online. Cool, huh? So I figured I'd try that. I fill out the form, submit. It asks me what kind of phone is the phone number I just submitted attached to? I answer Cellular. It's a cell phone. I'm staring right at it. The next page says 'Sorry, that's incorrect. Your application has been denied.' or something similar. Dang WaMu. It is a cell phone. Maybe CitiBank will accept my application. If not, I'll figure out something.

I've got about 70% of the money I was hoping for, now, and a checking account would be handy.

ARG…

Yesterday/last night, I sprained my wrist somehow. I'm not sure how. I just know I woke up with a very sore wrist. I think it's better now, but I'm not using it much.

I've got nearly 65% of the money I was hoping for, for another computer. However… Fry's seems to have raised the price on the computer I was wanting to get. To $200. So I guess I'll either have to see if they've lowered the price by he time I get the money, or I'll definitely have to get one on eBay. Sigh.

Progress

I only have about 52% of what I'd like, in order to obtain a computer. The money's slowing down somewhat, unfortunately. I need more. Ugh. I had to wait for 5 hours before I could get on the computer today, and that's low. I'd forgotten how annoying it is to just have 1 computer.

Stamps, stamps and more stamps

Aug-23-2006 By annelions

During my lengthy offline period, I re-discovered my stamp 'collection'. I don't remember where it came from, I think I bought a huge bag from a thrift store. I don't have them in a book or anything like that, simply sorted into ziploc bags. Oodles and oodles of stamps. Half of them were USA stamps, but I can't find most of them. I've got space stamps and airmail stamps from the US, but that's it.

I've got stamps from China, Japan, Thailand, Nigeria, Iraq, Iran, Kuwait, Rhodisia (North and South), Hungary, Italy, Poland, France, Germany… You name it, I've probably got a stamp from there. None are younger than 1980. Several are from the 1930's. Some mint, too.

I wish I could trade them for a new computer. I've now got about 50% of the money I'm hoping for, to get a computer with.

The whole collection's got to be worth something. Just because there's so many. Maybe $100 altogether? I don't know. Unfortunately, I don't think it'd be worth it to list the stamps on eBay. Stamps don't seem to go for much half the time. Of the 2,313 items matching 'stamp collection' on eBay, only 672 of them have bids. That's only about 30 percent. And many of those are at less than $1. Sigh.
